Kobe Tetsujin

Thu, 06/25/2009 - 01:04

Tokyo gets the 1/1 scale Gundam and Kobe gets the 1/1 scale Tetsujin 28.
Tetsujin will be 18 meters tall and is in the middle of construction.
Construction cost of the monument is 135,000,000 yen (1.4 million USD) with 45,000,000 yen of that being paid by the city of Kobe. The rest is being paid by donations and businesses.

The monument will be completed on the 4th of October and you will be able to see it in Shin-Nagata Kobe.

Video and photos below of some of the construction work going on.

Maybe these 1/1 scale mecha's being constructed around Japan are our secret defense system? ^^;

Some retro Tetsujin below.

And for those who have not seen the live action movie.

iPhone 3GS Japan Launch Event

Wed, 06/24/2009 - 10:31

The iPhone 3GS launch event will take place tomorrow night at Quest Hall in Harajuku near the Softbank store.
The main event will start at 22:00 and is being organized by comrade Nobi Hayashi pictured below - digital journalist and consultant for a ton of IT and gadget companies.

Press from all over the world have been called to the event and for some reason, I'm due to be up in front of them at 22:15 ^^; Maybe to announce the dannychoo.com iPhone/iPod Touch app?!

I will be in the area from 20:00 at Appliya Night (separate invitation only event) and if you are thinking of lining up for an iPhone then you may be able to get into the hall and see whats going on - think its the first 400 that get in though.
Expecting the CEO of Softbank Son Masayoshi and hopefully Aya Ueto too. My mission is to do a business card exchange with Son and have a photo with Aya.

Now I has something special for dannychoo.com readers - if you are an iPhone developer and can make it at 20:00 to Cafe Ratia ( http://www.ratia.jp/cafe/access/index.html ) Then you can join us at Appliya Night. Folks with really coolsome apps will be able to show off their apps to hundreds of people waiting for their new iPhone and probably (no promises though) to all the press at the hall.
Once you get to Cafe Ratia, say that you are a friend of Danny's at the door. I will be inside somewhere. Unfortunately this is for iPhone developers only. Costs 1,000 yen to get in.
If you are just buying an iPhone then go direct to Quest Hall and I'll drop by.

Would be great if you can make it - its going to be an incredible incredible event.

Eroge Websites Blocked

Tue, 06/23/2009 - 23:35

Looks like eroge maker Minori has blocked access from outside of Japan who will see the following message:-
minori official website.
This website cannot be browsed excluding Japan.

Some foreigners seem to be having an antipathy against EROGE.
Therefore, We prohibited the access from foreign countries, to defend our culture.
Sorry for you of the fan that lives in a foreign country.

minori Inc.

While folks in Japan will see what you see in the screenshot below. Could this a beginning of a trend especially after the British parliament came down on Illusion for the eroge Rapelay? Hope not.

As for the first photo - submitted by De-JaY - a loyal EF fan who will probably be disappointed about the news.
Speaking about EF - check out the OP with the breathtaking backdrops from Makoto Shinkai.

Original text from De-JaY below.Today Eroge developer minori closed their website for all foreign visitors.

This is rather sad. Especially since minori's newest project, called "eden*" will also be released in an all-ages version. :(

D5000

Tue, 06/23/2009 - 11:15
image ID#27054 D5000 Been sustaining heavy injuries to my thighs of late as more samples land out of nowhere in my lap ^^;
The latest gadget to appear is the Nikon D5000. Today's review includes sample photos and comparison pics with the Canon Kiss 2. Today's model is Ryomo-chan. image ID#27055 D5000 Jumping right into the review. First up are the main controls which take a bit of getting used to after using Canon SLRs for all these years.
With the Canon, you hold down the exposure compensation button with your thumb and dial with your index finger - with Nikon its the other way around. image ID#27056 D5000 Automatic and Manual switch on the top, Virtual Reality switch on the bottom. image ID#27057 D5000 Apart from the jog dial, all other buttons are in completely different places compared to the Canon. image ID#27058 D5000 Love the display on the D5000 - most of the Nikons I've seen comes with a visual representation of that thingy which controls the amount of light that gets let through. image ID#27059 D5000 Like the Canon Kiss 2, the D5000 comes with Live View. Unlike the Kiss 2 however, the Nikon takes full HD video. Press the LV button and then hit OK to start filming.

Recording resolutions are:-
1280 x 720
640 x 424
320 x 216
You can record for only about 5 mins or so on 720p before the recording stops. Looks like its due to heat. SLR with video capabilities seems to be relatively new. There is no auto focus either meaning that you should kit yourself with a wide angle or learn how to manually focus as you record stuff. A sample below of the office taken a while back. Looking forward to SLR's having stereo video recording and auto focus. The D5000 records in mono - crap mono. image ID#27060 D5000 I love this flip screen - useful for taking shots with the camera on the floor. image ID#27061 D5000 And the flip screen can be flipped like this to protect it. image ID#27062 D5000 The display rotates according to how you hold the camera. image ID#27063 D5000 Loads of language settings. image ID#27064 D5000 Pressing the info button (bottom left of screen) brings up this menu enabling you to change ISO and what have you. image ID#27065 D5000 The photo editing menus. image ID#27066 D5000 Its like a mini Photoshop in there! image ID#27067 D5000 And for folks who prefer English. Distortion control, Fisheye, Color outline and even stop-motion movie settings. image ID#27068 D5000 If you are learning Japaneses then I encourage you to keep your setting on Japanese. Force yourself to read as much as you can. You will learn quicker if you are using objects often that contains Japanese. image ID#27069 D5000 Custom menu. image ID#27070 D5000 The D5000 seems to have much more menu options than the Canon Kiss 2. I don't really read the instructions and try to use equipment by fidgeting about with it. Spent a few mins trying to look for the option to turn off photo numbering reset - still cant find it ^^; image ID#27071 D5000 A useful Recent Settings menu. image ID#27072 D5000 The SD card slot and battery compartment. The SD card got stuck and wouldn't eject for a bit though... image ID#27073 D5000 The battery recharger is a boo boo... image ID#27074 D5000 ...and this is the reason why - comes with a poxy wire. If I do take the Nikon with me on travels then I'd use the apple adapters to plug into the "8" socket.
The Canon Kiss 2 battery charger plugs straight into the wall. image ID#27075 D5000 D5000 along side the Canon Kiss 2. image ID#27076 D5000 Another thing the flip screen allows you to do is to take overhead shots easily. image ID#27077 D5000 And the best thing about the flip screen - enables you to easily take pics of yourself - useful for the video functionality too. image ID#27078 D5000 Now for some side by side comparison shots.
The Canon Kiss 2 has a kind of electronic bleep with a sharp crisp "kbleep!" for the shutter noise. The Nikon on the other hand is a dull "Kuroop!" From the shutter noise of the Canon alone, I can take a photo and know what settings I need to get the next best shot but for the Nikon I guess it will take some time to get used to. image ID#27079 D5000 I think I prefer the overall design of the D5000. The edges are sharper and the whole body feels more compact. image ID#27080 D5000 The D5000 comes with a bit of plastic to cover up the flash attachment which was a nice touch. image ID#27081 D5000 I hear some folks saying that Nikon is for Mac users and Canon is for PC users?! image ID#27082 D5000 The Canon Kiss has a bigger screen and the blue markings help distinguish what is what.
The Canon has a light sensor above the screen so that when you hold it close to your face, the display switches off. image ID#27083 D5000 The lenses screw on clockwise for the Nikon, anti-clockwise for the Canon. image ID#27084 D5000 Smaller flash for the Nikon. I never use flash for any of my photos - that washed out look feels terrible.
The Nikon is said to be much better in low light conditions and the ISO goes up to 3200 and then has Hi0.3, Hi0.7 and Hi1 - not sure what they are but presume even higher ISO settings? image ID#27085 D5000 While Nikon lenses will fit on a Canon with an adapter, Canon lenses wont fit on a Nikon which is a shame. image ID#27086 D5000 D5000 with one of the zoomkit lenses attached. image ID#27087 D5000 My current stock of lenses. From left to right:-
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm
Sigma 18-200mm
Canon EFS 10-22mm (wide angle)
Canon EFS 60mm (macro) image ID#27088 D5000 And as for this bunch I teased you with last time - two of these cameras actually belong to Ken and Jonny ^^; image ID#27089 D5000 This is my current imaging armory. Lumix LX3 and Webbie by Sony. image ID#27090 D5000 And now for some sample D5000 pics. I took these without knowing how to use the camera properly which is why some of these shots may look odd. For this shot, the sharpness was turned up too high. image ID#27091 D5000 A shot of this mornings desk. Damn. Gave a sneak peak of... image ID#27092 D5000 Hector at the controls. image ID#27093 D5000 D5000 outdoors. image ID#27094 D5000 At the Apple Ginza store. image ID#27095 D5000 Chris at the controls - an extremely talented web dev. We is lucky to have him. image ID#27096 D5000 18mm. image ID#27097 D5000 55mm. image ID#27098 D5000 Another 18mm by day. image ID#27099 D5000 Parking costs 200 yen for every 25 mins between 08AM and midnight. Drops to 100 yen for every 30 mins from midnight to 08AM. image ID#27100 D5000 Nothing better than a cold Calpis Water on a hot Summers day in Tokyo. image ID#27101 D5000 Metropolis Suburbia. Suburbia... image ID#27102 D5000 Kuro Neko Yamato is a trusted parcel delivery service - costs a wee bit more than other companies but are reliable and don't throw parcels like Sagawa is said to do. image ID#27103 D5000 Bicycle stop sign. image ID#27104 D5000 Lot of noise on this shot - had no idea what I was doing with the settings. Wallet belongs to comrade at Kotobukiya - filled with everything apart from money. image ID#27105 D5000 At a German restaurant for dinner meeting. image ID#27106 D5000 Some night test shots at Ginza. image ID#27107 D5000 Taken on a low ISO setting. image ID#27108 D5000 I think this is where the Volks Tenshi no Sumika store is. image ID#27109 D5000 In front of the Apple Store. image ID#27111 D5000 I think this was taken on the highest ISO setting of 3200. The road was very dark but the D5000 managed to do a fair job of making out the surroundings despite the low light with no tripod.

I've only been using the Nikon for a wee bit and as I don't have decent lenses yet. I'm still using my Canon as my main SLR.

Right now I could invest in getting a 18-200mm, 10-22mm and a macro lens for the Nikon but I don't really see the added value of doing that as I already have those lenses for the Canon. I'd rather get a Canon Kiss 3 which can take videos so until some decent lenses fall into my lap, its unlikely that I would be using the Nikon much - but my waifu said that she wants to use it ^^

Folks in Japan can get the Nikon D5000 from Amazon for 102,480 yen or from Amazon.com for 999 USD. Akihabara News - Gadgetry from Japan (Subscribe)

Dollfie Day

Mon, 06/22/2009 - 22:26

Looks like quite a few of you are posting your daughters photos - so why don't we declare today Dollfie Day? ^o^
Tag your daughters photos with "dollfieday" and I'll collect all photos after and stick them in single post next week. Give some details too - what hobbies they have and what food they like.
If you got time then watermark your photo with your website in one of the corners of the photo.

Here is my entry - Ryomo trying out a new hair style and now complete a knot in her sweater to show off her lovely belly.

Mon, 06/22/2009 - 12:03

7pm in Tokyo - preparing Vader Armor for a potential customer.

Closer look at the A New Hope helmet - much preferred this over the Empire Strikes Back helmet design.

By about 8pm-ish I am no longer a Sith lord - armor has been adopted by a new parent.
Will be going out n about with him in Tokyo once hes gotten used to and made a few mods for himself.

Just curious - how many of you cosplay?
I know that Gordon, ClearTranquil and Dancing Queen cosplay but who are the rest - come forward!

Japanese Skirts

Sun, 06/21/2009 - 23:50

Up until now, many Japanese school girls have been rolling up their standard issued skirts as they thought it looked cute. This could be a thing of the past as more girls are now starting to think that short skirts look very untrendy. The image below shows the default length on the left and how it looks in mini skirt form on the right

A few reasons/theories for this long skirt boom are given.
-Osaka's way of going against the short skirt school girls in Tokyo.
-Dont have to spend so much time restoring skirt to original length when warned by the teachers.
-Dont want to get sunburnt legs.
-Girls started to adore the looks of an Ojosama school in Nara. Ojosama is a bit like what Nogizaka Haruka was.

At Itai News you can see another pic of school girls with long skirts on which look nice.
Among the comments, there are also many voices saying that longer skirts look better too.

Pachinko

Sun, 06/21/2009 - 13:39

The first time I've seen a Pachinko parlor fitted out with sofas for couples.
If you are traveling to Japan then I would recommend that you give it a whirl. Is a very interesting slice of Japanese culture that you can experience for 500 yen - and you never know, you could strike it rich and walk out with a wad of money - or a wad of prizes that you exchange for money to be precise - a loop hole that enables you to gamble for money.

Photo below from the previous Pachinko article which talks about what Pachinko is.

Transformers Revenge Japan

Fri, 06/19/2009 - 16:06

For those who are planning to watch Transformers "Revenge of the Fallen" - bring spare underwear - at least 20 pairs. Its that good! Have still not seen Star Trek to compare yet but Transformers is a must see for Sci-Fi fans. image ID#27032 Transformers Revenge Japan On the way into the cinema they gave us this certificate to show that we were the first to watch the first public screening of Transformers Revenge in the world ^^; image ID#27033 Transformers Revenge Japan Zooming back in time to the end of the office day. Been working on the figure.fm relaunch. Here is the avatar creation screen. Now you dont need to worry about making your own - just upload any image and drag/resize the box.
UI needs a bit of work. image ID#27034 Transformers Revenge Japan Just before six, some of the lads come over. I take the opportunity to get rid of my unwanted rubbish - I mean useful stuff.

Ryan in my chair came over to Tokyo as part of the Geeks on a plane tour - Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing - Tech company visits and networking. image ID#27035 Transformers Revenge Japan Then its off by car to Kanagawa - about 30 mins drive. image ID#27036 Transformers Revenge Japan T'was a lovely evening's drive while listening to Ridge Racer R4. image ID#27037 Transformers Revenge Japan Was just before 6pm so the roads where relatively clear. image ID#27038 Transformers Revenge Japan Arrival at Lazona - a huge shopping complex that opened recently-ish. image ID#27039 Transformers Revenge Japan At Bic Camera to check out the transformers goodies. image ID#27040 Transformers Revenge Japan Mass produced so the quality in terms of detail isn't really there - looks decent though. Would probably look better with some weathering. image ID#27041 Transformers Revenge Japan Was thinking of picking this up. Want to spray it gloss white and wear it with my armor - TransTrooper ^^;
The Bumblebee voice mixer below. There is also Bumblebee's plasma cannon which looks quite good if painted to match my armor - love the recoil action. The helmet available at Amazon.com for 44USD and the Plasma Cannon also available from Amazon for 39 USD. image ID#27042 Transformers Revenge Japan Have you seen these Robo Q robots before? The worlds smallest robots with some sort of intelligence apparently. Steve Nagata just happened to have one on him. You can control them with the remote and if they spot obstacles they they will walk around it. 3,150 yen. image ID#27043 Transformers Revenge Japan After looking around in Bic Camera, its time to look for dindins. image ID#27044 Transformers Revenge Japan Didnt have time to explore this time round. image ID#27045 Transformers Revenge Japan Prawn with menchi katsu. Delicious. image ID#27046 Transformers Revenge Japan T'was one of the more traditional places where you get a bowl to crush your nuts. Sesame nuts. image ID#27047 Transformers Revenge Japan Dinner done and as we near 8pm, we hear more Transformer noises. How would you spell the transforming noise? I make it out to be something like Kuewchukukukoo ^^; image ID#27048 Transformers Revenge Japan Optimus Prime and Bumblebee in sight! So thats what the Pyramid was all about! Opens officially tomorrow. When does it open in your neck of the woods? image ID#27049 Transformers Revenge Japan Grabbing some grub. image ID#27050 Transformers Revenge Japan I've heard a lot about these IMAX cinemas and didn't expect too much apart from a bigger screen - completely exceeded my expectations.
The screen is a bit curved and the whole cinema rumbled with the explosions - a completely different experience and well worth it.

If you are tempted to watch a cam version then don't - you will completely ruin the experience for yourself. You should feel most satisfied with the money you pay to see this flick. Our seats were 2,000 yen each. image ID#27051 Transformers Revenge Japan In the first film, we had to watch until half way though until we saw Transformers action - in Revenge - its right from the beginning - a ton of it! Trailer 1 below. image ID#27052 Transformers Revenge Japan This time round, there are many varieties of Transformers - many surprises in store. The things that they can transform into are very surprising indeed ^^;

I did find some of the action hard to see - combination of the fact that the screen was huge and that you had to move your head left n right to catch the action, and also because of the designs of the transformers - some of the battle scenes ended up looking like scrap clumps of metal flying about - hard to distinguish what was what at times.
Trailer 2 below. image ID#27053 Transformers Revenge Japan The battle in Eygpt was full of intense action. They had this huuuge Decepticon which was formed by many construction vehicles. Optimus Primes extra "Super Parts" where kinda Macross-esqe.

Not going to talk much about the plot but I loved it - liked this one more than the first as we were blessed with Transformer action from the start. The film is 2 hours and 40 mins but never has those boring bits so you are pretty much wide awake for the whole show.

Many laughs to be had too - LOL at "Humping Decepticon" ^^;;
Would love to watch again but this time sitting further away from the screen so that I can catch any action that I missed.

Cant wait for the 3rd film...

Hina Robot

Fri, 06/19/2009 - 04:47

Azusa Dollfie

Thu, 06/18/2009 - 23:05

You've got your Mio custom head and now you can add Azusa to your collection too - currently has 14 bids and is now at 14,000 yen - a day left to go.

Speaking of Dollfie, looks like my suit is nearly ready...
Cant wait for doll seamstress Chun to finish it!

These photos without the inner shirt.

Mirai Gaia

Thu, 06/18/2009 - 13:31

Progress on the relaunch of figure.fm. A bit behind schedule and have a few issues to sort out but should be up by next week.
Below is a screenshot of the top page. Currently showing data being pulled using FeedFusion. You will be able to keep up with the latest figure posts and releases by month. More tweaks to the top page are needed before launch.

You will be able to manage and search your items very similar to the way you manage your current stuff on your wordpress or other blogging platform.

Mirai Gaia deals with the rotation, resizing and watermarking automatically. You will be able to upload multiple images per post and drag n drop to re-order. You can add descriptions for each image and will be able to designate spaces on your photos for notes too.
Members will be able to upload just by attaching photos to an email too.

And yes - you get this for Member Stuff too ^o^

Will be launching many community sites throughout the Summer - some multi-lingual and some Japanese only. Some of my clients will be opening up the community features too.

Mirai Gaia is:-
Syndicated - pulls and pushes feeds back and forth from social web services.
Publication - blog and content publishing.
E-commerce - Allows clients to sell services and goods - physical and digital downloads.
Market Place - Allows users to buy and sell online.
Multi-lingual - Launch multi-lingual sites with ease.
Community - Favorites, friends lists, messaging.

Jibun Damashi

Thu, 06/18/2009 - 03:36

If you have always wanted to be Kamen Rider and cant fork out the 300,000 yen or whatever it costs to be one, then how about paying 13,650 yen?

Bandai have come up with a product called Jibun Damashi where they will print your face on an articulated Kamen Rider figure - not only that, they will also print your name on the base and packaging too.

Maybe I'll take a picture of one of my daughters and have one made ^^;

Reservations open on the 26th from 11AM at http://jibundamashii.com/
